Slay the Spire: The Board Game has proven to be a popular and direct translation of the famous deckbuilding game to the tabletop, allowing you to construct decks alongside up to 3 friends. Now a popular digital fan-made mod makes the transition too, arriving on Kickstarter as the boardgame's first official expansion: Downfall.
We recently saw the early access launch of Slay the Spire 2, a videogame that the masses have been eagerly awaiting, and the game debuted with the surprise inclusion of a co-op mode that lets you take 1-3 others with you on your runs. And now we're back again with another headline in the same series, a new expansion to Slay the Spire: The Board Game which has been offering the same style of co-op play for the last few years.
Downfall originated on Steam as a completely free, fan-designed expansion to the original Slay the Spire, with a focus on an alternate way to play (Downfall mode) wherein you take on the role of bosses and villains hoping to bring down the standard heroes as you descend the spire. This concept has now become an official inclusion for the first time in the series' history, with this new expansion Kickstarter campaign showing off many of the big features the mod was built around.
The big ticket items are the 4 new playable characters: the all-new gun-slinging Hermit alongside the very recognizable baddies The Guardian, The Hexaghost and The Slime Boss.
In addition to the new Downfall characters and their respective all-new decks, the expansion includes a plethora of new bosses, relics and other toys like the fancy new transparent "gem" cards which can slide over top of any existing card to modify and upgrade them.
The campaign on Kickstarter features many options of pre-order pledge tiers, including a standard or upgraded collector's version of the new expansion, and also offering a reprint on both the standard and collector's editions of the base game. Additionally, many little pieces and extras are being sold separately as add-on items if you want to pick and choose exactly what you'd like. The Downfall Kickstarter concludes on April 9th.
