Fairy tale cause-and-effect simulation game Storyteller gets a big new content update, currently exclusive to Netflix

Corey Hardt, 11 July 2026

Storyteller had many years of built up anticipation behind it when it released in 2023 (it even won a Thinky Award for Most Approachable Game.) In this unusual breed of puzzle game, you need to use various story elements to piece together a visual narrative and hope that the unexpected outcomes your choices produce will move the story towards a specific endpoint, enjoying some of the ripple effects you might cause along the way.

A week ago a "Special Edition" of the game debuted featuring new chapters, characters and remixed content: all available free to Netflix subscribers (and currently only available on the platform.)

The trailer is a bit of a whirlwind tour through some new flashy scenes, but slowing it down and pausing here and there I believe I've discerned some of what new stuff we can expect to see: there are both additional puzzle levels showing up in old chapters featuring existing characters, as well as a few completely new chapters giving us whole new settings and story elements. Davy Jones and Marco Polo feature in a pirate landscape, while mad Dr. Frankenstein reanimates characters of your choosing. Hansel & Gretel are mentioned too.

This update also adds a new Index page which organizes the contents of your storybook into a easy-to-navigate single page, and something called "Jester Stamps" are joining the game's set of collectable alternate-ending achievements, usually granted for making particularly unusual or funny things happen in your stories. In a previous update we saw the Devil running amok inside our fairy tale tome, causing chaos in the form of dastardly evil story goals to check off.

Significantly, there's no Steam post or page for me to link to yet which will give you details about the new Special Edition update, because it's currently debuted exclusively to Netflix subscribers on mobile platforms: if you have an active Netflix subscription, you can play Storyteller for free, including the new stuff.

I've heard from a confident source that this update is indeed making its way to Steam through the game's PC publisher Annapurna, but it needs more testing time so I don't think we have a release date for that yet. The base game is currently 50% off, and I'm sure when there is news we'll see it pop up on that page.
