Studio Level-5 has revealed in a presentation this week that the latest entry in the Professor Layton series of story-driven puzzle adventures is still on track to release in 2026, showing off more story details, some big names attached to the development, and announcing the game will be coming to Steam and Playstation 5 in addition to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 systems. Here's the latest trailer for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam:
We've seen some of these story elements in previous trailers, but on display are more characters and some gameplay from Layton and Luke's next adventure in the steampunk land of Steam Bison. Some voice acting talent is confirmed to be returning and we get an announcement that Joe Hisaishi, famous for his composing work for many classic Studio Ghibli films, is working on music for the game. The trailer refers to this title as the 7th entry in the series, which is true if we count only mainline games starring the professor, but omits some spinoff titles and a recent sequel.
Perhaps the biggest bit of news here, since no release date was confirmed outside of the 2026 window, is that this new game will be the first ever Layton series title to come to PC and Playstation platforms. The series started back on the original Nintendo DS, and continued in the Nintendo handheld environment with some dabbling here and there in mobile releases. But never before has the Steam crowd had official access to one of these animated mystery adventures filled with thematic logic puzzles of myriad shapes and sizes. (It feels almost too coincidental that the game's name lines up so well with this first foray onto the digital PC marketplace.)
We don't yet know when this year the new game will debut, and I couldn't yet find a page for the game on Steam or the Playstation store, but you can find the game for wishlisting purposes on the Nintendo store.
