Uprising is a spinoff based on the very popular Dune: Imperium deckbuilding and worker placement game, and considered by many to be the best version of the game. It's available now for the first time in digital format as an expansion to the base game Imperium.
Some of the most popular boardgames in the last handful of years have been titles that intertwine the deckbuilding formula with other rich mechanisms like worker placement, a staple genre in the deep end of the tabletop world. Pairing a tightly designed combo of these two ideas with a modern blockbuster of a sci-fi media property, Dune: Imperium struck gold with enthusiasts in the scene, and then the stand-alone spinoff/expanded version Dune: Imperium Uprising cranked things up one notch further when it made its physical debut in 2023. This version currently sits just above the original as the 5th highest ranked boardgame of all time on BoardGameGeek.
Now developer Dire Wolf Digital, quickly becoming a de-facto leader in the space of porting boardgames to videogame format, has released this upgraded version in the form of DLC for its existing Steam rendition of Imperium. The shiny new Uprising expansion adds new cards, many small tweaks to the board and new elements such as spies which can watch over action spaces waiting for your opponents to take them, contracts which give bonuses for taking specific spaces, and lots of new leader cards to let you play as all sorts of deep-cut characters from the Dune universe.
But perhaps most importantly, as shown on the cover art for the game, Uprising brings the iconic and massive sandworms to the game's combat arena. Previously relegated to one specific purchasable card, miniature Shai Hulud can now enter the fray and sway the tide in your favor.
Dire Wolf has a track record of forging well-loved digital implementations of hit physical games: Root, Clank!, Everdell and Ark Nova are a few of the big hits from their catalogue. They've also released two previous expansions for Imperium, Rise of Ix and Immortality, each bringing with them new mechanisms and layers that deepen the strategic options on offer.
If you love a good sci-fi setting, getting into a crunchy optimization puzzle with friends and/or proving your military dominance over them, you could do a whole lot worse than checking out Dune: Imperium and the new Uprising expansion on Steam.
