Zoomates: a charming woodblock puzzle toy on Kickstarter now

Corey Hardt, 18 September 2022

This may shock you to hear, but leading research tells us that physical puzzles actually date back much farther than puzzle videogames... it turns out logic problems work quite well as cute little wooden toys. If that sounds appealing to you, give this project a look: Zoomates is a colorful, minimalist woodblock puzzle that includes several ways to play, and it's available on Kickstarter right now.

I love the chunky, abstract animal designs: it's quite fun to think about how each of the shapes was inspired by their real-life counterparts. The gameplay consists of a very thinky-looking tangrams-style puzzle, where you need to pack specific animals into a grid while obeying unique thematic restrictions. The animals can also be used for an additional jenga-like tower-stacking game. If you don't want to splurge on the wooden set, for $5 you can get a print-and-play PDF that will allow you to craft the animals out of paper.

Tom Brinton of Gladden Design is running the Zoomates project, and they've already reached their funding goal required to make the project a reality. Gladden has previously designed some other cool puzzle-y products like their Paper Apps DUNGEON, a little notebook filled with randomly generated roll-and-write dungeon-crawl levels, which is available to add to your Zoomates pledge. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on all these slick looking toys.
