Step-counting puzzler N Step Steve: part 2 has just been released, freely available on itch.io to play in your browser, concluding the story of Steve the spacefaring cat on a rescue mission to save his kitten crewmates.
The 2-part N Step Steve saga is a follow-up to the excellent 5 Step Steve, about a cat that can only move so many spaces before returning back to the latest checkpoint flag. N Step Steve expands on this original idea by labeling each flag with the number of steps Steve can take after touching that flag — touch a 3-flag, move 3 steps; touch a 6-flag, move 6 steps. Combining this central idea with mechanics like pushable boulders, conveyor belts, and laser-eyed statues results in a surprisingly deep set of puzzles.
Like the previous games in the Steve franchise, N Step Steve: part 2 is an open-world game, in which you are free to explore and solve puzzles in any order. While searching for your stranded kitten friends, you’ll encounter some optional bonus star challenges which really test your understanding of the game’s rules.
It’s recommended that you play the first part before diving into part 2, as it builds on some of the ideas explored in that game. I hear part 2 is much bigger, and may even feature guest appearances from other characters from the Thinky Cinematic Universe!
