A Steam sale event all about Sokoban puzzle games starts today. For the uninitiated, they've helpfully named their sale "Box-Pushing Fest" to let you know what the genre is all about. "Sokoban" is a Japanese term that literally translates to "warehouse keeper," and it was the title of the original Thinking Rabbit release from 1982 which established the name and spawned the sub-genre. So pushing boxes around is very much staying on-brand with our puzzle roots.
There are plenty of well-loved boxy favorites discounted during the sale, such as Patrick's Parabox, A Monster's Expedition, Void Stranger, Stephen's Sausage Roll, Isles of Sea & Sky and Bonfire Peaks.
But you'll also find some newer releases and games I'd consider slightly-under-the-radar gems: the sarcastic and playful Lab Rat just came out, along with CursedSword and The Electrifying Incident, and Maxwell's Puzzling Demon, Can of Wormholes, Jelly is Sticky and Paquerette Down the Bunburrows are all games that thinky enthusiasts have had a great time sinking their teeth into.
Check out the Box-Pushing Fest on Steam from now until April 28th. Who knows, maybe you'll try a new game that will convince you that Sokoban games ARE interesting after all and don't have to be boring!
