Motion Rec released this week, a cute new puzzle platformer with a lo-fi pixel art style that lets you record big chunks of moving and jumping around to play back in loops. It's available now in a Steam bundle with the beloved exploration platformer Öoo and CATO: Buttered Cat, another recent puzzle platformer where you always land on your feet.
In Motion Rec you play as the titular Rec, a "civilization-recording robot" navigating a "devastated world" filled with machinery. The central mechanic at play here is your ability to record a short sequence of movement and momentum, capturing it to replay at different times and places to get around hazards and traverse the environment.
We've seen similar takes on this kind of mechanic in the past, with recording puzzles even showing up in games as big and popular as The Talos Principle, but I quite like a game that gives the impression of having a singular focus and keeping things relatively restrained. Motion Rec also looks and sounds lovely: the mostly 1-bit black and white pixel graphics are gorgeously crafted, and the trailer features a very laid-back soundtrack clip which all combines into a relaxed vibe I can appreciate.
As part of their launch week festivities, Motion Rec is included in a Steam bundle with two other recent indie puzzle-platformer releases. In the MotionReCATÖoo Bundle you can get the new game in addition to Öoo, the word-of-mouth metroidbrainia hit from a few months back, made by the developer of ElecHead, along with CATO: Buttered Cat, a lesser known but also well-received puzzle game of making use of every surface and all sorts of silly gravity-defying tricks.
I sometimes find the discount tags on Steam bundles to be a bit confusing, so after some investigating, my short explanation is: Motion Rec has a 10% launch discount, and the triple-game bundle takes off an additional 10% from everything on top of that.
