Postmark Games have made a name for themselves in the tabletop world producing several gorgeous roll-and-write style games, all of which follow the print-and-play model. You pay a small amount and get access to game files that can be printed out and played physically, or can easily be played digitally on a PC or touch device.
They're back on Kickstarter right now with their latest offering Battle Card: a series of 5 dice-based micro-wargames made to be played single-player. Each battle is a single page and represents a different historic conflict from WW2. Check out the Kickstarter pitch video below:
For the price of £4 (around $5) you get access to the whole series of 5 Battle Card PDFs, which you can then choose to print out or load into any image-editing software to mark up and play digitally. You could even mix formats: displaying them on your device and placing physical dice on top.
Here's an excerpt from the Kickstarter campaign page describing the gameplay:
Each game features unique choices, and the player is often forced to make difficult decisions on whether to attack or defend, how best to bolster their main forces with support such as reinforcements and artillery, and when to advance or withdraw from conflict. Objectives vary in each game, though usually the player is trying to take control of an area, eliminate enemy units, or defend a location.
Postmark's previous games feature similar elegant aesthetics applied to a variety of settings: deep ocean diving in Aquamarine, hiking through nature in Waypoints (pictured above), and sailing off to find treasure in Voyages. All of these games are available on their website for the same low price as Battle Card. The print-and-play format means you don't have to worry about them going out of stock or paying expensive shipping costs, and keeps the price super low in general.
One of the creators of Battle Card, David Thompson, has some impressive wargame design experience: he's credited as one of the designers of the unique and very popular Undaunted series, which is enough to convince me that this new micro-game is worth checking out. Battle Card will be available on Kickstarter until October 1st.
