Announcing the Thinky Games database — a treasure trove of incredible games!

Joseph Mansfield, 21 October 2024

Welcome to the all new Thinky Games website, now featuring a database of incredible thinky games!

Honestly, the best way to learn about the new site is to go exploring. Not only has the entire site had a makeover, but you'll find hundreds of amazing games to discover and play. Come back later to continue reading my waffle, if you like!

Over the last couple of years, there’s one question that I’ve never had a good answer for: “Ohhh these games look great, where do I find more like them?” Now, finally, I can answer them: “right here at Thinky Games!”

It seems kind of obvious, right? Where else would you find a great thinky game? But until now, you really had to go digging - maybe ask on Discord, scour through our social posts, hope that you stumble upon some gold. No more! We’ve curated over 350 amazing thinky games (with plenty more to come) and have done everything we can to help you search and filter through them for your next favorite game.

We've grouped games to help you find what you're looking for.

We have detective games, adventure games, sokoban games, logic games, platforming games, first-person games, strategy games, line-drawing games, relaxing games, spooky games, easier games, super challenging games. We have perplexing puzzles, mind-boggling discoveries, intricate systems, delightful “aha” moments, surprising secrets, and so much more.

And these aren’t just for existing gamers. If you love to sit down with a coffee and today’s crossword, or guessing whodunit before the TV detective does, or just tinkering with an interesting math problem — we really believe these games are for you too. You might be surprised by just what you’ve been missing out on.

If this all sounds like your jam, you can even join Thinky Games. Not only can you use your account to keep track of games you love, but you’ll also receive our biweekly newsletter summarizing the latest news and games (including a free little web-game recommendation every time!).

This is really just the beginning too. We’re of course going to keep adding games and improving their data, both new and old (we have a backlog of over 300 games!), but we also want to keep improving the website, making it easier to use, and to keep adding cool new features. No doubt we’ll have lots of bugs to fix too!

I know some of you are thinking "wait, but my favorite game is missing!". We know, we know, there are loads of great games we'd love to add and we'll get to many of them as soon as possible. We also know that we can't be completely comprehensive, but hopefully you'll agree that the games we do have are an amazing collection, representative of the many great games in this space.

In case anyone is interested in the technical side: we've rebuilt the entire site from scratch! It was previously a WordPress website, which unfortunately didn't give us the flexibility to do everything we wanted to do. So we've now rebuilt the site as a Next.js application, using both Payload CMS and a custom CMS to manage our content. We did a loooot of data munging to import all the WordPress articles and set up all of the game data (some pretty horrendous Google Sheets were involved!). It all seems to have imported fine though... I hope!

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped put the new website together. Alongside the core team who have supported the project all the way through, I’d especially like to thank Oriane Tury for taking on the role of database editor, Laura Tamm for building the website itself, Watermelon for helping us with design, and our team of writers who have been writing descriptions for many of the games (Asher Stone, Andrew Nicholson, Gwen C. Katz, Cay Macres, Hira, and Russel Hansen). Also, huge thanks to Carina for giving us the funding and support needed to do all this!

We hope you all discover some great games you’ll love to solve. Now go, explore!

(I really hope the website doesn't crash)
