The Curse of the Last Reaper is the latest (and sadly, the last) in the series of Golden Idol Investigations DLC packs released for the mystery detective game The Rise of the Golden Idol, debuting earlier this week out of the blue.
This marks the 4th and final expansion pack planned for the game, and the conclusion of what they've called their Detective Pass which allows you to get all of the DLCs in one bundle for a reduced price. As has been the case for each new release, Last Reaper features multiple new mystery cases taking place in a whole new setting.
The Last Reaper is a pirate ship filled with "hidden treasure and cursed artefacts", and you'll set sail on the ship in one timeline to then be whisked away over 100 years into the future where you'll dig through the wreckage of that same ship and start to untangle exactly what happened in between. There's also mention of collecting pieces of a torn-up treasure map, because how can you have a pirate-themed mystery without one?
One of the obvious parallels to draw when it comes to a detective investigation game happening on a pirate ship is the very highly-regarded Return of the Obra Dinn. The premise here sounds similar, and it feels likely to me that the whole concept of the Last Reaper DLC is likely a nod from Color Gray Games to one of the inspiring originals in their scene. If these new mysteries can hold a candle to that classic, they'll be in fantastic company.
You can get The Curse of the Last Reaper DLC on Steam now, and you'll need The Rise of the Golden Idol to play it. If you're planning to play all of the standalone case packs released, you can opt for the Detective Pass which will save you some money.
