The latest broughlike games for MacOS

Broughlike games are a subgenre of roguelike games involving turn-based combat on small, procedurally generated boards, along with several other compact game design features. Typically, the same directional inputs are used either for moving on the grid or attacking enemies, and there’s no option for skipping turns. The intricate mechanics create complex strategic gameplay, with potentially sweeping consequences unfolding from every player input.

Beyond immediate survival, the objectives are often not made explicit; broughlike games require experimentation in order to discover their various rules, including the effects of unconventional items. Stats building is kept minimal and generally happens with no menuing. These opaque systems are sometimes complemented with odd high-contrast visuals and chiptune-inspired sound design.

The broughlike subgenre originates from games created by indie developer Michael Brough in the early 2010’s. It was notably the theme of a 7 Day Broughlike jam [archived version] that took place in 2019.
