A grid-based puzzler in which your directions of movement are a resource.
UDLR_Modify is a grid-based puzzle game where you slot pieces into a circle before reaching a finish line. Collecting such pieces modifies the way you move inside the level. Solving the puzzles requires careful planning, since changing the moveset may turn innocuous rooms into soft-lock situations.
You’ll start out with a blank circle which can move up, down, left and right. The circle has four empty sections which correlate to each direction. The grid also contains several diamond pieces, which can be slotted in the circle for either one of the directions. When a piece is slotted, it alters the number of spaces you move on every input for the corresponding direction. For instance, you may end up navigating the level with a 2-space jump every time you want to go right.
Once all required pieces have been picked up, you’ll still need to reach the exit tile. However, there may be some obstacles along the way. Walls, for example, can’t be passed through unless you have a piece allowing you to jump over them. So you may have to visualize your moves on the grid several steps in advance. Some pieces may also need to be pushed, which can only be achieved if you are unable to pick them up from the direction you approach them from.
UDLR_Modify was first submitted to the Acerola Jam 0. You can undo moves, restart puzzles, and jump to the next level if you get stuck. As of early 2025, Two-Headed Deer is working on a full-length follow-up called UDLR.
