Pin down reds, yellows and blues in this color-enhanced Minesweeper.
RYB is a free abstract logic puzzle game about finding out the color of each tile over very small setups. Deductions are made from the colored circles revealed on some of the tiles. The game delivers a number of challenges in an elegant display of minimalist design.
Each RYB level is made of a number of tiles arranged in a compact geometric pattern. Most tiles (if not all) are black at the beginning, and the goal is to assign each one with the correct color. Some tiles feature circles indicating colors present on adjacent tiles, however the circles won’t always tell the colors of all adjacent tiles. A few additional rules, including one based on color addition, are introduced as you make your way through the sets.
The gameplay is similar to Minesweeper, although with significant differences. In RYB the “mines” can be either one of different colors, so it’s less about uncovering the location of the mines than finding out the right type of mine. The tiles omitting information (by having less circles than the number of adjacent tiles) add to the difficulty. Still, all levels can be solved with pure logical reasoning, and guessing is never required.
RYB is especially remarkable for building puzzles out of a very small number of tiles—usually around ten, even for the late game patterns. The levels don’t drag on but they often begin with a difficult break-in. Things are made slightly more strenuous by the absence of a drawing tool (such as the ones provided by Tametsi or 14 Minesweeper Variants to sketch out hypotheses), but this is somehow balanced by the game allowing two mistakes in every level.
