Bee Magic

Bee Magic is a free grid-based puzzle game about casting spells by moving your character around. In order to collect the four stars on the single-screen map, you’ll have to perform specific input sequences to trigger the spells and get past obstacles. The game only contains one level, but it shines in being able to reinvent itself across playthroughs.

Starting out, a layer of fog surrounds most of the map, hiding elements until you get close enough to them. The level contains several orbs which, once picked up, will teach you the steps to perform spells and unlock their casting. Each short series of instructions comes in the form of arrows and dots. You’ll have to figure out what each spell does and how it could help you get closer to the stars. A few tips and humorous drawings can be found on scattered pieces of paper.

Completing the game once is fairly easy, since the point of the level is actually to be recontextualized multiple times. After your first playthrough, Bee Magic takes you to the trophy room, where you’re presented with several combinations of the six orb spells you’ve used before. Each combination challenges you to beat the level again—for instance without ever using the Fire spell. Completing these challenges may reveal hidden spells that will help you optimize your use of bee magic.
