The sequel to the 2022 surprise smash hit detective game The Case of the Golden Idol has announced a release date, and it’s coming tantalizingly soon: on November 12th you’ll be able to don your sleuth hat again for 20 new cases. Here’s the new release date trailer for The Rise of the Golden Idol:

While the art style has shifted slightly away from pixel art, it’s still got that charming, slightly-uncanny, hand-drawn feel that made the first game look so unique. (And I’m happy to see the unsettling gruesome death scenes haven’t gone away either.)

The Case of the Golden Idol was a big community favorite when it showed up in 2022, and I feel it even reinvigorated some interest in the detective-game genre and what could be done with it. (Check out our very own Case of the Thinky Game Jam that we ran in collaboration with the devs!)

If you can’t wait until November 12th, there’s a demo on Steam now for the new game, and you can wishlist to get notified when it releases. If you haven’t yet played the first game, now’s the perfect time to take the next few weeks and explore some great modern mystery design.
