The annual Game Awards live show took place on December 8th, showcasing lots of of big-budget titles that have shaped the industry landscape in 2022. One big reason to watch the event is the many new games and trailers that are revealed between the awards segments. Viewfinder was one such title, an intriguing upcoming first-person game based on shifting around your perspective and entering 3D scenes created by placing photographs. The visuals and mechanics on display are quite striking and impressive: it’s always fun when someone shakes things up and messes with 3-dimensional space in a new way. The game has been announced for Steam, PS4 and PS5.

If you’re familiar with the 2020 release Superliminal, you might feel like some of the elements shown off in the Viewfinder trailer feel somewhat familiar. It doesn’t look like the games are doing exactly the same thing, but certainly there’s some crossover in the point-of-view and size-shifting mechanics that have been revealed. How puzzly will this new take on the ideas end up? I recall a somewhat mixed reaction when people actually got to play Superliminal, despite the viral excitement that early trailers generated. Only time will tell if Viewfinder will hold up under scrutiny, or if a new perspective will reveal that its flashy exterior was hiding less depth than we hoped.
